There is evidence that garlic originally grew wild in China, India, Egypt, and what is now Ukraine.  Wild garlic grows prolifically in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, which very well could be the "center of origin" for this remarkable food.  Regardless of its center of origin, garlic has been cultivated for thousands of years around the world and has become a staple in cuisines across many continents.

Art healing, also known as the healing arts, is a term that is applied to the use of art in emotional and physical healing.  Art As A Healing Force helps survivors of tragic experiences heal through art, music, storytelling, poetry, dance, painting, sculpture, and everything that is usually thought of as creativity. We believe that art and healing are joining together to become one.  Paintbrushes in hand our blank watercolor paper was waiting for color.   We gathered together with our paints and put splashes of watercolor paint on the pressed fiber, with hues of yellow, red, orange, pink and green.   Groups of all ages gathered for an day of art and healing after three people were killed in a mass shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival.  For many of us, healing art is a spiritual path, a transformational process, a way of being.  We believe that making art frees the body's healing mechanisms to heal. We believe it unites body, mind, and spirit. In art and healing, no interpretation or therapy is necessary; The creative process is the healer.

Art healing is real.  It helps all of us who have art in our souls and have used art as a therapeutic healing tool throughout our lives, understand its value at the deepest level. Although a relatively new concept in western society, only in the last 60 years have health professionals, therapists, and others in the medical profession begun to acknowledge the therapeutic effects of art and music on the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of people.  For those that grew up in Gilroy and witnessed the shootings, they used art as a fundraiser after painting art with garlic bulbs.  Some were in the shape of a heart, others were vibrant representations of garlic and love.

In the form of artistic expressions, art therapy helps bring out traumatic experiences and emotions.  Sometimes these feelings are very difficult to express.  Art has the potential to help survivors to process and cope with negative experiences.   Art is a win-win.  The process of art-making itself serves as a positive, healing experience, and reshapes the brain to start experiencing joy, and the final art can be displayed and viewed by many people.
